Microcrystalline Cellulose is a derivative of the plant tissue cellulose. Cellulose is the most abundant organic material on earth because it forms the primary cell walls of all plants, algae and oomycete fungi. Cellulose consists of repeating glucose units bonded through a beta 1-4 glycosidic linkage forming long chains. The long chains of the cellulose present in the cell wall are bonded into crystalline microfibrils which are resistant to chemicals and are hydrophobic. There are also some amorphous regions in the structure where there is weak internal bonding. Microcrystalline cellulose is obtained from high quality wood pulp by basically removing these amorphous regions from the cellulose and extracting only the crystalline regions. It finds wide applications in tablet making because it produces very hard tablets which are not friable yet, it breaks down easily in the body and it is an excellent excipient for solid drugs.

Stearic acid is useful as an ingredient in making candles, soaps, plastics, oil pastels and cosmetics, and for softening rubber. Stearic acid is used to harden soaps, particularly those made with vegetable oil. Even though stearic acid is a saturated fat, studies have suggested that it has little effect on blood cholesterol levels, because such a high proportion is converted to oleic acid.
